Parusha Naidoo

Original Utensils: exhibited at the Food Cultures and Politics Festival at the District Six Museum

Leftovers: commentary on American chicken dumping in South Africa, exhibited at Berlin Food Art Week 2017

Parusha is an artist and accidental plant-based chef who encourages people to think creatively and critically about food, especially regarding the popularly held beliefs around food and nutrition. She aims to get people to try new things and let go of old ways of seeing through cooking, cooking classes and art. In 2012 to 2015 she ran a pop up restaurant in Berlin called Chakalaka Suppers, veganising South African dishes, with the idea of creating a sense of home through familiar smells, tastes and textures. She has a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from Cornell University and tries to share the knowledge gained there to avoid diseases of affluence. In 2017 she exhibited at Food Art Week in Berlin, gave a talk at Street Food Festival in Johannesburg on “Reducetarianism” and exhibited at The Food Politics and Cultures Festival in Cape Town. Last year she gave a talk on Radio2000 about changing perceptions about vegan food and exhibited at Food Art Week in Paris. She has recently set up a food art space promoting Global-South-centric food culture.
